The European School Survey Project on Alcool and Other Drugs (ESPAD) est une enquête européenne quadriennale dont le but est d'étudier la consommation d'alcool, de tabac et d’autres drogues ainsi que les attitudes envers ces substances chez les élèves de 15 et 16 ans. Elle est coordonnée par le Conseil suédois pour l'information sur l'alcool et autres drogues (CAN) et soutenue par le "Co-operating Group to Combat Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Drugs" du Conseil de l'Europe (Groupe Pompidou). Vingt-six pays européens ont participé à la première enquête en 1995. En 2007, 40 pays y ont pris part, dont la Suisse. Il s’agit de sa seconde participation.

Les données et connaissances rassemblées dans le cadre de cette enquête permettent des comparaisons avec les pays participants et constituent une base de référence pour l’élaboration de mesures ciblées et d’aides en matière de dépistage précoce, de prévention et de traitement des problèmes liés à la consommation d’alcool et d’autres drogues à l’adolescence.

Le choix des classes s'est fait par échantillonnage aléatoire et concernait les 8e, 9e et 10e degrés scolaires. En 2007, plus de 7500 élèves ont été interrogés en Suisse au moyen d'un questionnaire à remplir en classe durant une heure de cours ordinaire. La participation était volontaire et l'anonymat garanti.
